Some people prefer to fry their meatballs, but personally, I prefer to bake them. I’m not totally opposed to frying, but I just find that baking them is easier for me. I also feel like there is less to clean up afterwards. So there’s that!

How to Make Homemade Meatballs

Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a dark baking sheet with parchment paper. Set the prepared baking sheet aside for use a little later.

Combine: Gather one large bowl and two smaller bowls. In one of the small bowls, stir the breadcrumbs and milk together until the breadcrumbs have absorbed the milk. Then, in a separate small bowl, whisk the two eggs together. In the large bowl, combine the meats, eggs, soaked breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, onion powder, salt, pepper and parsley. Using the tips of your fingers mix the ingredients together until combined. Be careful not to over mix your ingredients.

Shape: Using a cookie scoop or large spoon, scoop the meat mixture and carefully roll into a ball with your hands and place on the parchment lined baking sheet.

Bake: Place the baking sheet into the heated oven and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and flip each meatball using tongs. Return meatballs to the oven and cook for an additional 10 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.

Homemade Meatballs Tips:

Most important tip = don’t over mix your ingredients! The best advice I can give you is to use your fingertips and top of your fingers to mix the ingredients. If you don’t like touching raw meat, try using food-safe gloves.

Don’t feel like you have to have perfectly round meatballs. I like a more rustic look to my meatballs and this ensures that I don’t over work the meat.

Use a cookie scoop, spoon, or measuring cup to create meatballs that are uniform in size. This will ensure that the meatballs cook evenly and they’ll all be done at the same time.

Use a mixture of ground beef and ground pork to get moist meatballs. Since pork is a little fattier than beef, this will help make your homemade meatballs incredibly tender and moist.

You can freeze leftover meatballs. I suggest making a double batch and freezing half for an easy freezer meal later in the month. Before freezing meatballs, allow them to cool. Once the meatballs have cooled down, transfer them to a baking sheet and flash freeze in the freezer for about on hour. Remove from the freezer and transfer the meatballs to a freezer safe bag or container.

To use frozen meatballs, simply remove the meatballs from the freezer and place in the refrigerator to thaw. Once thawed you can reheat in sauce on the stove or place in a slow cooker with sauce for 2 -3 hours on low.

Serving Suggestion

Because these homemade meatballs are so versatile, there are so many different ways you can serve these to your family. Because everyone in my family absolutely loves Skinner® pasta, especially long cut pasta, I decided to do something a little different from your traditional spaghetti.

There’s no denying that my family loves a traditional red sauce with their pasta. But it’s always a welcomed surprise when I switch things up a bit. This time we opted for a richer sauce that also boasted a spicy tingle that our taste buds really enjoyed.

We picked up a couple jars of H-E-B’s Just the Sauce™ in Spicy Calabrian (it’s in the pasta aisle) and it was such a tasty alternative to our traditional spaghetti dinner. The sauce is super savory and offers just the right amount of spice.

If you prefer a different kind of pasta, Skinner has you covered. I think penne, rotini or shells would also be great choices.

I can’t really think of anything easier that says “I love you” more than a homemade, comforting pasta dish like this one. I remember those homemade meals of my childhood and I love being able to pass some of them along to my children.

Notes

Meatball Tips:

Over-mixing will cause your meatballs to be tough when cooked. When combining the ingredients, use the tips of your fingers instead of your whole hand.

Make sure you scoop the mixture with a cookie scoop or large spoon so that all the meatballs are uniform in size. This will ensure that the meatballs cook evenly.
